More tearing apart iPhone photos

Here are the last of the photos we took while disassembling the iPhone.

To get to the LCD screen you nee to remove a series of tiny screws around the chrome bezel. Once you do that you can pop it off.

iPhone LCD removal

We didn’t do a full removal of the LCD. Quite frankly that would probably be the most daunting task of all since we’d have to peel away the entire thing from the iPhones front facia. Instead, the iPhone was put back together at this point. And yes, it still works. It’s just not activated just yet.

Tearing apart the iPhone – iPhone pictures

The iPhone has a main processor and memory chips from Samsung Electronics. It’s audio-processing chip is from Britain’s Wolfson Microelectronics PLC. The WiFi chip is from Marvell Technology Group Ltd.

In the photos below, we see an even better shot of the bottom of that iPhone mother board as well as the ribbon connectors that attach to the bottom of the iPhone mother board. These ribbon connectors are very tiny and very difficult to re-attach once you disconnect them. At first I thought I might have to take everything apart to get them back in place.

In the final three photos you’ll see that I lifted the motherboard out of the front casing so you could get a better look.

Here we have close up photos of the iPhone sim card slot which is under the double pcb iPhone motherboard. The two pcb’s are connected with locking interconnect clips. It was exciting to finally get this far into the iPhone. I felt like Indiana Jones.

The next set of photos we removed the screws that hold down the iPhone mother board. We pryed the mother board up a bit to get a shot of the iPhone’s Sim card slot and the ribbon cables that flow throughout the rest of the iPhone that connect it to various things like the LCD display and speakers.

Can you change your battery for your iPhone? Is it a simple plug and play battery.

It seems that the iPhone battery takes up half the space of the iPhone.

iPhone guts exposed – iPhone circuits and connectors

In this series of photos, you’ll notice a few things. First of all the iPhone battery is indeed soldered to the motherboard with three wires, red, white and black. This means that only an authorized Apple tech will be able to install a new battery (unless you’re like us and void your warranty by taking the thing apart)! Also, each antenna wire is nicely attached with a small drop of glue for durability and probably for watersealing as well.

In the last three photos, you’ll see the iPhone antenna leads sticking up because we pulled them off so you can see the iPhone motherboard.

In this series of photos we have our first photo of the iPhone battery and a closer look at the iPhone 2 mega pixel camera hardware. The black thing next to the camera is black foam. Notice the white wire also near that general area? Thats one of the antenna hookups that attaches to the logic board. The final picture is the opposite end from the camera. The tiny connector attaches to the iPhones aluminum backing.

Inside the iPhone

Now that we got the back cover off of the iPhone, we can take a closer look at what is inside the iPhone.

Picture 1-3 shows the cover off of the back of the iPhone. You’ll see the iPhone battery is the large square in the middle. The third picture shows the iPhone logic board. It’s a two sided board with 3 antenna leads coming off of it. Also in the right corner of the third photo is the iPhone camera.

Pictures 4-6 show the back side of the aluminum casing. Everything on the case backing is connected by one ribbon cable. You can see that the iPhone power button, volume button and vibrate mode button are all connected to the back of the case. Also note the headphone jack is not soldered to the logic board at all so there is no chance of breakage if the headphone jack is bent.

How to disassemble an iPhone – Photos

WARNING:
Doing any of this will void your warranty. You’ve been warned!

Now that we’ve got that the antenna cover off we’re gonna take that aluminum case backing off. This part is the hardest part! Again if you have a case cracking tool, use it. Be very careful since the silver bezel is right next to that curved aluminum back cover.Run the tool along the bottom edge of the aluminum backing on both sides of the phone. When you are able to crack it open enough, you’ll be able to pull it apart. See pics below.

Taking apart an Apple iPhone – Photos

WARNING:
Attempting any of these things will VOID your Apple iPhone warranty. You have been warned. Now that that’s out of the way… on to the take apart !

We’ve decided to take our iPhone apart to see what is inside this amazing cellphone. How does it work? Is there a little wizard in the phone making the iPhone work? let’s find out.

Remove the Antenna Cover

The first thing you’ve got to do is get that plastic, black antenna cover off of the iPhone’s back. If you have a plastic case tool, please use it! If not a hard plastic tool with a wedge like shape will allow you to separate the antenna cover from the silver part of the casing. Be careful and go slowly.

To take the antenna cover off we used a plastic blade. Below are the photos of what the cover looks like off the iPhone.
