iPhone 4 Death Grip Doesn't Affect Edge Connection

I've been watching the whole "death grip" with the iPhone 4 with interest. Some say it's a defect, while other reports claim that all phones do the same thing, while others claim its a little of both.

I believe it's an issue with software that Apple will fix as soon as their engineers figure it out. I could be wrong, but here's a test you can do for yourself if you have an iPhone 4.

If you have the so called "death grip" condition, go ahead and make those bars disappear. Now I want you to do a little something:

Go to Settings > General > Network > Turn off 3G.

You're now on the Edge network. Watch those bars come back. If it was a hardware issue, wouldn't those bars stay gone, no matter what network you were on? My guess would be, yes. this is one strange problem!

All we can do is wait and see what Apple does to address this issue. Either way, rest assured, if it's a software OR a hardware issue OR both, Apple's got your back and will fix it.

iPhone 4 : First Thoughts

The FedEx guy came at just about 11am today in Hawaii. He dropped off two iPhone 4's to my house. It was very exciting to open up that box and finally get the hold the iPhone 4 in my hands for the first time.

The first thing I noticed was that it felt smaller, and very different than my previous iPhone 3G. The rounded, curved back was gone. In it's place was a flat angular edge. Immediately the feel and weight of the iPhone 4 is quite striking. It feels solid in your hands. While it might be slightly heavier than the previous iPhone 3GS/3G, it feels substantial and very sturdy.

This device was made for iOS 4 in mind. Combined with the faster Apple A4 processor, everything was faster. Web browsing, downloading email and even tweeting felt so... fluid. The camera has almost no lag time between launching the app and taking a photo. Shot to shot is as quick as you can press the shutter it seems. Recording video is wonderful and the results are even BETTER!

The best feature of iPhone 4 has to be FaceTime. It is so cool. You won't understand it until you try it for yourself. Once I made that first FaceTime chat connection, I understood why this was going to change everything. It was like all of my childhood dreams or sci-fi wanderings coming to life. FaceTime just works. There wasn't anything special I had to do and it was just like making a phone call. Switching between the front facing camera to the back was so simple and intuitive.

I can't wait to see what Apple comes up with next! My next fun thing will be downloading iMovie app!

What A Day It Was: Did You Pre-Order an iPhone 4?

As soon as pre-ordering for the iPhone opened up, things on the Apple Store went crazy. I can only imagine what the stats looked like at the data center that houses the Apple Store servers. Mac Break Weekly joked about it in their podcast yesterday, Twitterers complained, bloggers and news sites reported on the failures... we just kept trying to pre-order that iPhone 4!

Well, yours truly finally got two iPhone 4's pre-ordered so that they'll be shipped her by June 24. Others were not so lucky. One of the local Apple Stores was showing no way to reserve one via Apple's online store, so I have to image that they had sold through all of their allotment. The process of pre-ordering one of these things, simply put, was not fun at all. It was almost like a bad game of trying to guess what was going on. I have no idea what it would take to make it better. The demand for this product simply stripped the resources of both Apple and AT&T.

Here's hoping Steve might be able to figure out how to fix this same time next year. The question is whether or not things will get WORSE if there is a new carrier involved?
