technoBox Brings Roland 303, 808 and 909 sounds to iPhone

technobox2.jpg When I was a teenager I saw a guy named Bob Kilpatrick perform on stage at a youth camp I was at. He had only his acoustic guitar and two little silver plastic machines that he called his backup band. One of the machines I was familiar with was the Roland TR-606 drummatix drum machine. I knew about it because one of my friends had one and I had lots of fun programming drum patterns on it so we could jam to them when we played guitar. The other box was a Roland TB-303 which is highly sought after and revered as THE "acid" techno groove box to have. Both of these analog rhythm boxes gave me my first taste of playing with electronic music machines.

The TB-303 would later become very valuable. I've seen some of these things priced at $2500+ to this day! I suppose the reason for the demand is that these are classic analog synths and those sounds are wonderful to those in the know. When I saw that Audiorealism had released technoBox technoBox (303 808 909 studio), complete with TB-303 and the ultra-popular TR-808 and 909 drum sounds and a built-in sequencer, I knew I had to try it out. I'd love to have those three rhythm machines right in my pocket to play with at any time!

Subatomic Studios' Fieldrunners is a Solid, Must-Have Tower Defense Game

In the relatively short time that the Apple iTunes AppStore has been online, there has been an amazing number of "tower defense" games...At last count, I think there was at least three different ones that I knew of, including one from Square Enix.

In any case, one of the more popular games currently available is FieldRunners by Subatomic studios. If you don't know the premise for tower defense games, it's pretty simple: prevent the onslaught of enemies from reaching the other side...(i know it sounds like a bad chicken crossing the street joke)

Apple Now Allowing iPhone Developers to Offer Promotional Copies of their Apps

In a relatively recent move, it seems that Apple is now allowing iPhone developers to offer free promotional copies of their applications. In a nutshell, Apple allows the developer to issue up to 50 promotional codes which allow users to download the app for free. At the moment, these codes can only be used in the iTunes store with "Redeem" link. We haven't been able to test this out yet, however as soon as we do, I'll try to do a more detailed write up about the process...

In any case, this bodes well for budding iPhone developer and users who may want to try an application before buying.

Finally! Crystal Quest for iPhone

crystalquest.jpg
I've been waiting.

Waiting and hoping for someone... anyone to port Crystal Quest to the iPhone. I'd search for it almost everyday in the iTunes App Store but nothing even close was introduced. Well the wait finally ended!

Crystal QuestCrystal Quest? [click takes you to iTunes Store] by Hands-On Mobile is here and I couldn't be happier.

Lotus Notes Support Arrives on the iPhone

After announcing that they were working on Lotus Notes support for the iPhone in March 2008, IBM has finally made iNotes Ultralite available in the AppStore. The free download allows users to check their email as well as view their calendars and contacts.

According to a ComputerWorld article, after the app is downloaded, iNotes can be accessed via the iPhone's browser. Also included is a VPN client, Lotus Notes Mobile Connect.

The initial reaction has been positive and unfortunately at the time of publishing the app was not yet available in the AppStore. If you'd like to download the app, it should be available shortly.

App of the Day - Air Sharing

I haven't had time to test this one myself but I have downloaded it and on my next sync it'll get added to my iphone. In any case, the app is called Air Sharing and it was written by a company called Avatron Software Inc. Normally the developers say that the app would be priced at $6.99 however they are giving it away for the introductory price of FREE. This amazing deal can be found in the iTunes store for the next two week...Last time I checked there were 69 reviews and I'm sure many more are coming...looks promising so far!

Here's the link and a screenshot of what the app looks like:

Ilium eWallet Review

ewallet-photo4.jpgMany of us would love an easy way to keep track of our credit cards, passwords and serial numbers on the go. There have been many times that I've needed access to a serial number during a software install at my job, but I end up writing it down on a piece of paper because storing it on my iPhone in the Notes app isn't an option. It's just too insecure!

Well the folks of Ilium software have brought eWallet to the iPhone. Ilium software is no stranger to the mobile application market as they've released a bunch of cool apps for Palm and Windows OS. I've been using eWallet for a few weeks now and I'll give you a quick overview of the app.

iPhone SDK 2 released today

Today, Apple released the iPhone SDK beta 2. The upgrade includes the Xcode Interface Builder that will allow programmers to create interfaces for their iPhone programs.

In a nutshell, the Interface Builder will allow developers to literally "drag and drop" interface elements into their applications and just link the controls to the source code behind the scenes.  More information to come as we receive it.

Microsoft to make iPhone Apps?

Looks like Microsoft may try their hand at creating some iPhone apps, but the question is, what kind of app will they create?

According to Fortune, MS is looking at the SDK and already have ideas on what they want to do with it.

iPhone airGuitar?

Someone has been crafty enough to program a hacked iPhone so that it can be played like an electronic guitar. I'm not sure if this guy is the author or not, but one thing is for sure, when the official iPhone SDK comes out, there will be tons of applications out there making use of the iPhone's unique abilities. Watch the magic below:

Tabulate - Bookmarklet for the iPhone

Tabulate
The folks over at Inventive Labs have created Tabulate: a bookmarklet for the iPhone. What's the big deal about it? Well Tabulate brings the convenience of 'open in new tab' to Safari on your iPhone or iPod Touch. Using a cool looking hovering widget that you invoke from the bookmarks menu, Tabulate works it's magic! There is also an option of queueing up several links to open in new tabs with just one click.

You're just gonna have to try this out yourself to understand how cool it is. And no, you won't have to jailbreak your iPhone to use Tabulate! It's a bookmarklet after all!

Google warns of Issues with Gmail and iPhone Software update 1.1.3

Google has a warning out for those of you who are using Gmail on the iPhone along with iPhone software update 1.1.3:

via MacNN:
The company says that if users setup mail on their iPhones simply by tapping the "Gmail" icon, the v1.1.3 upgrade will convert access from POP to IMAP. The result is that messages read on an iPhone will also appear as read in the Gmail web interface and any deletions will move messages to the web Trash bin, where they will be permanently deleted after 30 days.

You can always manually configure Gmail's IMAP or revert to POP.

The change is just one of many changes that Google made to Gmail this week. Other changes include: automatic refreshing and contact completion on the iPhone. On regular gmail:  expanded chat, the ability to integrate non-Google e-mail accounts and larger attachment limits.

First Trojan Found for the iPhone

So it's finally happened. A trojan horse piece of software has been found out in the wild by Modmyiphone enthusiast forum and then confirmed by security research company F-secure.

The trojan will only affect jailbroken iPhones, so those of you who haven't jailbroken your iPhone have nothing to worry about.

According to the forum, the application masquerades itself as an update to Erica's Utilities and is labeled as "113 prep." When loaded all the app does is display the word "shoes." But after uninstalling the app, it removes files from the /bin directory on the iPhone, breaking valid apps that were installed on the jailbroken phone.

Reportedly, F-Secure said that it was an 11-year-old child playing with XML files who created the Trojan.

This trojan may have been harmless, but no telling what could happen if some malicious hacker decided to try out a few things right?

While we don't want to bash anyone who has jailbroken their iPhone, we do want to mention that you really don't know the people on the other end who are making these applications. Using a third party installer app like AppTap doesn't give you security that you might think it does.

Our advice is to wait for the official Apple SDK and official Apple distribution method before installing third party apps on your iPhone. You have been warned.

Google Releases Application for iPhone

Google (GOOG) has released a unified web application that combines search,  mail, calendar and rss reader for the iPhone. No jailbreak required for this app! Simply navigate Mobile Safari on your iPhone to http://google.com/ to access all the Google apps in one place.

This comes on the heels of their updated RSS news reader, email and calendar apps for the iPhone. It only makes sense that they'd integrate them all via a clean interface made for the iPhone.

Any user can switch out of iPhone mode to "Classic" mode by choosing the link at the bottom of the page for each application.

Jailbreak your iPhone or iPod Touch with App Snap

The hacker folks have finally introduced a one-touch instant jailbreak for both the iPhone and the iPod Touch. This hack will open your iPhone and give you full disk access and at the same time it'll install Installer.app. For those of you who don't know, Installer.app will allow you to install almost any third-party iPhone app out there.

In order to use this, you'll just need to point your Mobile Safari to jailbreakme.com. You'll have to type it in on your own because we don't want to be responsible for anyone installing this by accident! Once you're on their site, read the directions and then tap on "Install AppSnapp". When Safari disappears and you end up on the home screen, you're good to go. Wait a few moments more for the unit to restart then you're in.

Do this at your own risk, no liability, yadda yadda...

Apple to allow third-party NATIVE iPhone Applications in February

Yes you read that right! Apple will allow NATIVE third party apps to live on the iPhone!

Apple Inc. (AAPL) CEO, Steve Jobs wrote today in the Apple.com Hot News Section:

Let me just say it: We want native third party applications on the iPhone, and we plan to have an SDK in developers’ hands in February. We are excited about creating a vibrant third party developer community around the iPhone and enabling hundreds of new applications for our users. With our revolutionary multi-touch interface, powerful hardware and advanced software architecture, we believe we have created the best mobile platform ever for developers.

Steve went on to say that they are taking their time creating the SDK because they want to do it the right way:

It will take until February to release an SDK because we’re trying to do two diametrically opposed things at once—provide an advanced and open platform to developers while at the same time protect iPhone users from viruses, malware, privacy attacks, etc. This is no easy task. Some claim that viruses and malware are not a problem on mobile phones—this is simply not true. There have been serious viruses on other mobile phones already, including some that silently spread from phone to phone over the cell network. As our phones become more powerful, these malicious programs will become more dangerous. And since the iPhone is the most advanced phone ever, it will be a highly visible target.

This is going just as we predicted. Patience is what will pay off. Again, I think many of you out there should play it safe and wait for the official SDK that will verify applications and allow true authentication of applications via Apple's mechanism rather than jailbreak your precious iPhone.

And just in case you thought the iPod Touch was going to be left out, Steve added:

P.S.: The SDK will also allow developers to create applications for iPod touch.

WebApp directory appears on Apple.com

Today Apple Inc. (AAPL) debuted their Web apps page with a lot of great sites to visit that are tailored to the iPhone!  They've also released a guide to developing web apps, as well as a way to submit your web app to be featured.

Don't know what a web app is? Check out Apple's page describing what web apps are and how to get started making your own.

MakeiPhoneRingtone saves the day

We couldn't get our custom ringtones to work with iTunes, even though we posted how to do it. It just never worked and we didn't like the chore of having to switch the file naming and switch it back thing.

Luckily the folks at <a href="http://www.rogueamoeba.com/utm/posts/Article/MakeiPhoneRingtone-2007-09-11-09-00">Rogue Amoeba</a> have come up with an app that can get iTunes to recognize your custom ringtones,  <a href="http://www.rogueamoeba.com/utm/posts/Article/MakeiPhoneRingtone-2007-09-11-09-00">MakeiPhoneRingtone</a>.

We haven't tried it yet, but we will later on today. We hope it works and we really hope this won't break with Apple's next version of iTunes

iPhone Finally able to Scroll the Springboard with New App

Tonight as I was killing some time with the iPhone, I started up the Installer app and noticed a brand new application called SummerBoard. SummerBoard's description said:

SummerBoard extends SpringBoard to add scrolling, wallpaper and soon more!
For those of you who don't know what the SpringBoard is, it's the launcher that appears once you power on your iPhone. Currently, if you're using Installer and putting in tons of cool apps, you're limited to just 16 apps on that one screen because the SpringBoard doesn't scroll at all.

SummerBoardOn a whim, I installed it and was pleasantly surprised at how well it worked! SummerBoard is version 1.01 but will probably see tons of updated before the end of the week just as all of the applications do that are handled by Installer app. SpringBoard really works and even shows your wallpaper! Get it by installing Installer.app which we talked about here.

iPhone's 16 Application limit broken

Erica Sadun over at TUAW posted footage of Nate True's Dock Package that allows iPhone hackers to display more than 16 applications at once by creating a scrolling left to right listing of the application icons.

You can get True's Dock Package here. It does have a few bugs since it's relatively new but it does indeed work! I can't wait to see what the iPhone "dev" community comes up with next!

iPhone Native iRC Client and beta AIM Client

Last night, as we were checking out the new version of Installer.app, we stumbled upon two new packages.

One of them was an iRC client called BitchX. We haven't iRC'd for years so we decided to install it and try it out... just to see how far along they were on the development of the application. Needless to say, we were very impressed with what we found. BitchX is a really nice iRC client for the iPhone that actually works! We were in #iphone for just a bit. We're pretty sure that diehard iRC folks will love this app, but we couldn't get into typing all those "/" commands on the keyboard.

Then we also found a very early beta of an AIM client. We installed and tried it out but unfortunately for us, it didn't work at all. We've read and seen reports elsewhere that show the client working. While we could log in, we couldn't bring up a buddylist and thats where the fun ended. Hopefully the developer makes progress and we can give it another spin in a few days.

All of this application goodness can be found by installing the Installer.app on your iPhone. C'mon... it's easy! You can read about it here.

The easiest way to get iPhone Native apps into your iPhone

screenshot.pngJailbreaking is the term folks are using to describe an iPhone thats been hacked to allow third-party native apps like Lights Out to run on the iPhone.

In the past (oh about a month ago!) jailbreaking meant you had to use the terminal and do a bunch of different things to hack the iPhone. This spawned a variety of different applications that did the same thing easier, but not quite as easy as the common iPhone user would have liked.

Finally theres an application called Installer that makes jailbreaking the iPhone easy to do. The folks at nullriver have designed an application that actually installs itself without needing to know an command line or terminal geek speak at all. After the Installer.app jailbreaks your iPhone and installs itself, it allows you to see a whole world of applications that are out and about in iPhone hacker / developer land!

We've played with the installer over the last week and must admit that it's the best thing to happen to the iPhone yet. So what exactly does the Installer.app do? Quite simply, the installer is very much like a software update on a mac with a twist. Not only will the installer app check for updates to it's own software, but it will look for updates to anything else the Installer.app has installed as well. The Installer.app constantly checks various sources for new iPhone "packages". The packages are applications that can be installed at anytime on your iPhone. Most of the packages are still in beta / developmental stages but it gives you a chance to play with the apps and see what developers are doing.

So what happens after you've installed an application and decide you no longer want it on your iPhone? Simple, just select uninstall and the Installer.app will take care of removing the application for you. It really is the easiest thing!

Currently the Installer shows a list of Development packages such as Perl, Python and Ruby, a few games like a nintendo emulator and iPhoneDoom. Theres also a bunch of network utilites like DNS Tools and you can even compile an Apache web server on your iPhone!

The nullriver team is constantly updating the Installer.app software and the packages are always registered and checked for updates each time Installer.app is launched.

Download the Installer.app here.

The First iPhone Native Game: Lights Off

Yeah, you read that right folks... It's not a webapp made for iPhone, but rather a real, Native iPhone application!

The folks at Delicious Monster have conjured up an addictive game called Lights Out. The objective is to switch all of the lights out. Tapping a light toggles it, along with the four adjacent lights. Once you switch all of the lights out, you'll advance to the next level!

The app was created by Lucas Newman and Adam Betts and requires some hacking in order to get it installed but it's well worth the effort. Perhaps if more apps like this one start coming out, Apple will take notice and start opening up the iPhone.

Download Lights Out here.

iFuntastic has a full file browser

iFuntastic v2.5 is now released with a full filebrowser so you can hack away at your iphone with a easy to use interface. Bug fixes include carrier logo naming and m4p ringtones can now be added.

Some fun features:
Check out the 'Browser' page:
You can edit and replace any graphic on the phone!
You can replace any system sound!
You can color your SMS balloons!

DemoApp hacked to work on the iPhone

DemoApp is an application on the iPhone you probably didn't even know you had. It allows the iphone to play a single movie over and over in a repeat loop. Eric Sadun over at TUAW has a run down on the DemoApp. Heres a sample:

Where is DemoApp located?
It's found in /Applications. You will not be able to see this application without hacking your iPhone.

How do I make my iPhone automatically play a movie?
Place an h.264-encoded movie named Demo.mov into /private/var/root. Reboot your iPhone. (Power down and then re-power on.) The iPhone automatically opens your movie and begins playing it on a loop.

How do I make it stop?
Remove the movie from /private/var/root and reboot.

For the complete lowdown on DemoApp check out Erica's post on TUAW.

GTD on the iPhone with GlueyNotes

GlueyNotes is a new web app made for iPhone that incorporates GTD (Getting things Done). The site also includes a videocast of how to use the webapp.

This seems to be a great way to keep a to do list if you haven't already tried W2 (click here).

Logging in on your iPhone gives you a different view than logging in on your browser on the computer. This uses what looks like markdown and a few pointers from GTD. Also, checking things off on the iPhone, doesn't delete list items completely, it still leaves the item in the list with an x next to it when you go back into the browser.

A better explanation of how to use GlueyNotes is here on Rob Rohan's blog.

Try it out if you need an on the go to do list or would like to use GTD on your iPhone. We'll be taking it out for a spin today.

iPhone Activation App is here

For those of you who want to activate an iPhone without using iTunes so you can use a non-iPhone AT&T SIM, you can now do this without doing a bit of command-line or accessing the terminal.

iActivator is here and it basically is a program that doesn't require you to open the terminal at all. Be warned though... this is still "beta-ish" software and if you're afraid of "bricking" your iPhone, better not to do it.

Google iPhone Search page

Google has an experimental page created specifically for the iPhone. Not that Google is badly built or slow in any way shape or form... it's minimalist design is one of its strongest features. Critics will say we shouldn't be making iPhone specific sites but, with EDGE the only option other than Wi-Fi, I'll take as much bandwidth savings as I can get.

Check out Google's experimental iPhone page here, which works really well with its' Javascript / AJAX design.

Read a Web Comic on the iPhone

So maybe this isn't a web app per-se, but we've found out about a pretty cool way to spend some time with your iPhone. It's a web comic. Sure you can view any web comic on your iPhone, but this one is specifically formatted for the iPhone which we thought was really cool!

nemu*nemu is a really cute web comic thats worth reading if you have some time to kill and want something to check out on your iPhone. The style is leans toward "anime" so this may or may not be your cup of tea, but so far we've enjoyed what we've seen. The comic is perfectly formatted for the iPhone in standard position since the comic is done vertically.

Give it a shot... it's funny and it's free!

nemu*nemu iPhone edition can be found http://nemu-nemu.com/iphone/.

iPhone Wiki: w2

Steven Frank created a really cool web app specifically for the iPhone. He couldn't find a good way to input notes into his iPhone so he created a way to do it! At first he tried a few wiki's but they didn't do what he wanted, so he rolled his own.

W2 is a little wiki just for the iPhone. It's a great way to keep notes, to do lists and other things. The big plus here is that it's accessible from any computer... and it doesn't use Marker Felt as its default Font like the Note app does in the iPhone.

W2 uses Markdown syntax has a built in search, and the ability to embed images. Oh and did I mention that it's a wiki? That means that you can link stuff! All of this is stored in a plain text file. There are no databases.

There are a few requirements: PHP and your own webhosting environment is a must, unless you are just doing things on your local network, then you can probably use Apple Web Sharing.

Have at it here.

Digg! On your iPhone

Social bookmarking site Digg has just released their iPhone ready version of Digg. The interface is simple and elegant and makes looking through Digg a pleasure on the iPhone. The best feature? The permalink page grabs ONLY the top 5 moderated comments. If you've ever used Digg, you know this is a FEATURE. The less Digg comments for viewing, the better.

So what are you waiting for? Go check Digg for iPhone app out now!

Twitter on your iPhone

If you're into Twittering on your desktop computer, it's now possible to do so on your iPhone! Well actually it's always been possible, but now theres some cool new iPhone apps that are made for the iPhone.

For the uninitiated, Twitter is sort of a cross between blogging and instant messaging without having to type a whole lot. It's a great way to let others know what you're up to since you can only write a few lines of text per twitter.

The first Twitter iPhone App is Pockettweets, and the other is Hahlo. We found Pockettweets to work a lot better than Hahlo, but then again, since these are web based applications it could be because hahlo's server was busy.

Both are designed nicely, but we really think Pockettwitter is the way to go for now.

Looking for iPhone Apps? They're over here!
