Apple Back-to-School Promotion & New MacBook specs

Today, Apple launched it's annual Back-to-School promotion for U.S. educational customers. This year's sale, offers rebates on Apple's full line of iPods, up to $229 (depending on which iPod you choose...) In any case, a purchase of any new mac qualifies as long as its not a Mac Mini. Rebate Amounts are as follows:

  • iPod Touch - $229
  • iPod Classic 120GB - $229
  • iPod nano 16GB - $199
  • iPod nano 8GB - $149
  • iPod shuffle 4GB - $79
In order to qualify for the rebate, you must purchase the computer plus the iPod at the same time on the same receipt and purchases must be made through Apple or a qualifying Authorized Campus Store. The sale ends on September 8, 2009.

In other news, Apple, quietly upgraded the specs to it's white MacBook to the following:

  • Processor up to 2.13 Ghz from 2.0 Ghz
  • Ram up to 800 Mhz from 667 Mhz
  • Hard drive size increased to 160 GB from 120 GB
All while maintaining its price of $999. Yes, a modest bump, but one I'll take regardless...So, if you're on the fence on whether to go mac or not, now might be a good time, take advantages of these rebates and minor upgrade to the MacBook.

Matte Finish & Enhanced 3G in Next Generation iPhone?

If MacRumors.com is right, the next generation iPhone will have a matte finish and include enhanced 3G as part of it's new features to be unveiled sometime next month during the World Wide Developers Conference (WWDC).  Additionally, if we are to believe other swirling rumors, it will also have a electronic compass, 32GB of storage and a radio...although I'm not exactly sure about it including a AM/FM tuner.

In any case, take these rumors with a grain of salt, it'll only be a matter of a few days before we know the truth...For yours truly, depending on how much of an upgrade it is, I may be waiting for the fourth generation iPhone...Hopefully Apple stuns us all once more and I'll have a new phone by July...

SlingPlayer Mobile Appears in AppStore

slingplayer.pngOn Wednesday, after what seemed to be forever in the techworld, Sling Media's SlingPlayer SlingPlayer Mobile appeared in the iTunes AppStore.  And, although the hotly anticipated app does allows users to watch TV over the internet, it does come at a heavy cost to the network and the wallet.

First off, before we go into details on what exactly this application will allow you to do, let's discuss some of the caveats of this long-awaited application.

Next Gen iPhone Details...

From what seems to be a questionable post from a forum poster at a Chinese site, it seems that the 3rd generation iPhone may be a small upgrade. So far, the features unveiled are:

  • 600 Mhz CPU
  • 256 Mb Ram
  • Digital Compass & FM tuner
  • 3.2 MP Camera w/autofocus
  • 32 GB Flash Storage
  • No changes to physical size/casing
I'm not sure how much of this to believe as a few things make me doubt it's validity...however I could be wrong and this feature list could be entirely right. One of the things that doesn't sit well with me is the fact that it has a digital tuner and an autofocusing camera. Maybe not so much the fact that it has an autofocusing camera but Apple has NEVER included an FM tuner in ANY of it's iPod products...oh well, we'll see who's right in the next few months. Who knows, maybe i'm wrong...it has happened before.

iPhone OS 3.0 Beta 5 Released & AT&T to Lower Monthly Fees?

Yesterday in an somewhat out of normal release schedule, Apple released iPhone OS 3.0 Beta 5....just 8 days after the release of Beta 4. This is most likely due to the upcoming World Wide Developers Conference in early June as Apple needs to complete the OS's feature set. As some of you may know, I'm a developer however I haven't installed any of the Beta OSes on my iPhone because my phone is critical to my daily communication. In any case, Beta 5 is released & should any surprises occur, we'll let you know...

[Review] Credit Card Transactions on your iPhone with iSwipe

iswipe3.jpgIf you've ever gone into the Apple Store (who hasn't?), you've seen that many of the employees have mobile checkout capability. Using a Windows Mobile based system, the Apple Store employee can charge your credit card and even email the receipt to you. I surmised that Apple has been forced to use the Windows Mobile based system because at the time they didn't have a portable device to do the transactions. With the iPhone / iPod Touch, those days may be over. Enter iSwipe Credit Card Terminal iSwipe Credit Card Terminal
