AT&T Hopes to Extend iPhone Exclusivity Until 2011

Reports from the field suggest that in the U.S., AT&T is looking to maintain its exclusive carrier rights with Apple to be only iPhone distributor until at least 2011. Previously thought to expire in 2010, AT&T stands to lose some competitive ground over competitors Verizon and Sprint if the iPhone were available on other carriers.

The iPhone in its current form is not compatible with current Sprint, T-mobile and Verizon networks because the networks are not similar. Minor hardware adjustments would be necessary to allow the iPhone to operate on other networks.

We'll keep an eye on this and let you know when there are further developments.
