[Review] FL!P

In this full edition of the FLIP family, eBattalion has included their free "FL!P Lite" FLIP Lite as well as their 99 cent app, "FLIP! Puzzle" FLIP, and a nice extra stage for good measure.

Not familiar with FL!P?  

In short, FL!P utilizes the iPhone's accelerometer to push blocks around the board. The blocks will move until they hit either a wall or an obstacle. The goals are different per stage - I'll detail them below.


There are three different stages to choose from. The first is "Standard". This stage is built like a Tetris game. Colored blocks will fall onto the screen one at a time and you an tilt your phone to move them to the column you'd prefer. Pressing down onto a column opens a down arrow function that forces the block straight down - to speed up the process. Tilting the screen heavily to the right or left will cause the piled blocks to slide around. The goal is to link up like colors (3 or more, depending on the level) so they disappear or create chains.

The "Puzzle" stage sets up blocks and obstacles with goal markers for specific colored blocks. The goal is to move the blocks to those markers in the set number of flips alloted. If you succeed, you move to the next level. If you fail, the level restarts - but be warned, your chances are limited. The restart chances reset as you complete levels, which is nice.

The final stage is "Speed", which is similar to the Puzzle stage, but without the goal markers. The object is to pair the two matching color blocks on screen before time runs out. 

The game concept is pretty simple and easy to get started right off the bat. The hard part is mastering it. I started with the Puzzle stage and completed up to level 22 before stopping for the night. The game saves your progress if you pause/close the application mid-game. I didn't get very far on the "Standard" stage as keeping in mind the sliding blocks as well as the falling block AND the height restriction, it can get rather challenging to keep track of. 

My biggest gripe is the music - or lack (of variety) there of. After a few levels, it becomes rather monotonous and somewhat irritating to listen to. So much so, I turned off the sound after a few minutes into gameplay. I then found that you can turn off the sound off and run the game while running your ipod - which makes the gameplay much more enjoyable.

I had some issues with tilt accuracy - especially in "Standard" mode with the falling blocks and sliding "stationary" blocks - if tilted too far to the right or left, all the blocks will slide (as mentioned above). I wasn't certain how to carefully move a block into place without over or undershooting the desired column. I then found if you press on the column you'd like the block to fall onto and tilt the screen to allow the falling block to move into the the down-arrow functioning "chute", it forces the block down without overshooting. Once I found this trick out, I moved levels much quicker.

I highly suggest those interested in buying the full version of FL!P FLIP to try out the FLIP Lite version FLIP Lite first, just to get your feet wet. If you like the concept, bypass the FL!P Puzzle and just go straight to the full FL!P game. At the price of $1.99, it's not necessarily going to break the bank and it'll be bound to keep you entertained longer than say- the scarfing of a Happy Meal.
