In the relatively short time that the Apple iTunes AppStore has been online, there has been an amazing number of "tower defense" games...At last count, I think there was at least three different ones that I knew of, including one from Square Enix.
In any case, one of the more popular games currently available is
FieldRunners by Subatomic studios. If you don't know the premise for tower defense games, it's pretty simple: prevent the onslaught of enemies from reaching the other side...(i know it sounds like a bad chicken crossing the street joke)
In that respect,
FieldRunners is pretty much a standard tower defense game, where it does shine is in the way it handles power ups and its simplicity. There are only four types of weapons: a machine gun, a plasma based gun, a rocket launcher and a lightning type of gun. These weapons can all be upgraded 2 times for increased firepower. Weapons require dollars to be upgraded and funding can be obtained by destroying enemies ($1 per enemy destroyed no matter how hard or easy they are to kill)...Enemies by the way come in the form of soldiers, tanks, bikers and helicopters, and at times they come fast and furious.
We think that
FieldRunners ($4.99) is an arcade quality game and is sure to keep you busy for hours on end...The only drawback is it takes a while to build up your defenses and the enormous amount of time you'll be spending on this very fun game.
