iPhone 3G Download Speed Capped at 1.4 Mbps?
Numerous people have noticed that specifications from the Apple website state that the 3G iPhone may be limited to 1.4Mbps. This is very unusual as other phones that are 3G enabled post much higher download rates...One such example is the Motorola Q which is able to download at 3.6 Mbps...Also, HSDPA cards are able to download data at 7.2 Mbps.

There are two different issues here: the speeds that some devices AT&T sells are capable of, and the speeds that devices actually get on AT&T's network.
AT&T's entire 3G network — and this goes for all smartphones, tethering, and dedicated LaptopConnect cards — is 1.4 Mbps down/800kbps up.
Here is AT&T's official press release about its nationwide 3G buildout:

"3G" represents different specs that are capable of speeds well beyond 1.4Mbps; AT&T sells many devices that list their capabilities in their specifications, such as the Motorola Q's "3.6Mbps"...but while the Q supports 3.6Mbps, AT&T's entire 3G HSPA network only supports 1.4Mbps.
So, what does this all mean? That AT&T isn't artificially limiting the iPhone in any way.
