Apple buys chip designer P.A. Semi for $278 million

Yesterday, in a somewhat uncharacteristic and unexpected move, Apple agreed purchase a "boutique" microprocessor design company known for its sophisticated, but low-powered chip designs. The stunning announcement came during a question and answer session during a Forbes interview, however, the Apple spokesperson would not comment on how they would use the technology.

Speculation is running rampant in the iPhone and iPod communities about what this deal means for the upcoming Intel Atom specification released earlier this month.

P.A. Semi, was founded in 2003 by Dan Dobberpuhl, who was a lead designer for the well-regarded Alpha and StrongARM microprocessors developed by Digital Equipment in the 1990s.
