Contour Showcase Review

One of the very first things new iPhone owners do is to look for a case that fits their particular lifestyle and how they want to be using the phone. Often times, the biggest challenges is that the amount of cases being manufactured is just amazing.

In my former life as a Windows Smartphone user(not by choice), I've had the holster style of case and it worked pretty well for me. With the iPhone I knew I was looking for a case that could be used both horizontally and vertically. On top of that, it had to have some sort of protective case/shell around it to protect the iphone from bumps and minor falls.

I started looking online and seeing what other people were saying and it seemed like a lot of them liked the Contour Showcase. Eventually I went down to our local Apple store and decided to take a look for myself. When I got to the store, and saw all the different cases, the Speck ToughSkin case caught my eye. It looked really good, so I bought it, went outside and quickly put it on the iPhone. Looking back on the experience, immediately putting on the case was a really good idea because although it fit well and I liked the feel of it, the belt clip plastic was weak and felt like it would break easily.

Quickly, I took off the case and put it back in the box and went back in to the Apple store. Luckily(not) for me the apple store had just re-opened after doing some reconstruction and was jam packed. The return was easy, I quickly picked up the Contour Showcase and took it to one of the representatives. They didn't give me any problems with the exchange, so eventually I fought my way out of the store with the Showcase.

The Showcase in my opinion was a much better choice. The case can best be described as a hybrid between a hard plastic shell and a rubberized-type plastic that surrounds the edges of the phone. It has all the usual cutouts: the home button, speakers, recharging port, headset port, on/off button, volume rocker and silent switch.

As for the clip and holster, the plastic seems to be pretty sturdy and also provides some support for the iPhone when it's locked in. The only thing that may be a problem in the future is that the clip that holds the iPhone in the case may wear out and your iPhone may unexpectedly slip out one day.

One of the really neat features of this case is that you can choose which way you want the phone to face while it sits in the holster. If you don't have a screen guard, you can face the phone inwards and if you're the type that likes to show off your iPhone, you can have the screen facing outward.

For the most part, I feel that this case is a very good case and the right choice for me. If you're interested in a hard shell and a holster combination type of case, then take a look at the contour showcase, you won't regret it.

Pros:

  • iPhone can face either in or out
  • Case can be used without the holster if you don't like the clip system
  • Hard shell seems strong enough to withstand most minor bumps, etc.

Cons:

  • iPhone may slip out of the holster clip one day due to normal wear and tear
  • Shell makes it hard to type on virtual keyboard if you need to reach keys near the edge of the iPhone
  • Case may not let the iPhone "breathe" and in some cases lead to overheating.
