October 2007 Archives

The hacker folks have finally introduced a one-touch instant jailbreak for both the iPhone and the iPod Touch. This hack will open your iPhone and give you full disk access and at the same time it'll install Installer.app. For those of you who don't know, Installer.app will allow you to install almost any third-party iPhone app out there.

In order to use this, you'll just need to point your Mobile Safari to jailbreakme.com. You'll have to type it in on your own because we don't want to be responsible for anyone installing this by accident! Once you're on their site, read the directions and then tap on "Install AppSnapp". When Safari disappears and you end up on the home screen, you're good to go. Wait a few moments more for the unit to restart then you're in.

Do this at your own risk, no liability, yadda yadda...

Ah. I can still recall the moment it happened. I saw the iPod via the web during a keynote by Steve Jobs. I hated it. I thought to myself, who in the world is gonna buy this thing? Why is Apple making an mp3 player when there are so many of them out there already?

Then I actually met one in person. Picked it up and played with it. There was something amazing about spinning that clickwheel and seeing the songs zip by and it was at that point that it hit me: this thing is going to be awesome. That shiny sliver and polycarbonite white body, with its 5 gig HD would be mine that day.

Although the iPod has gone through a lot of changes, namely the loss of firewire transfer (gosh I really, really miss that) and of course no dock included, overall things have just gotten better.

Happy birthday iPod. You're 6 years old today. My how time flies.
The iPhone Elite folks have released a tool that is supposed to rebuild your iPhone's seczon lock table (the one that holds the unlock info for your phone). They call it revirginizer. Supposedly this will return your phone to it's pre-unlocked state so you can safely upgrade to 1.1.1.

If you're in that boat of folks with a bricked iPhone, this may be your lucky ticket out of that mess. As always, we say be cautious when using any third party "hack". I'd check the net for updates and comments on if it works or not before trying it out, even on a bricked iPhone.
Erica Sadun has put together an unofficial FAQ about Apple's upcoming iPhone SDK.  Although it's kinda sparse (c'mon it is unofficial) she does go over some basic questions folks might have about the SDK.

Since there's an official iPhone SDK coming for the iPhone and iPod touch, we highly recommend that you don't jailbreak your iPhone or iPod Touch. The jailbreak currently uses an EXPLOIT and will surely cause heartbreak/sadness/anger, etc when Apple plugs the hole in the next Firmware update.
Yes you read that right! Apple will allow NATIVE third party apps to live on the iPhone!

Apple Inc. (AAPL) CEO, Steve Jobs wrote today in the Apple.com Hot News Section:

Let me just say it: We want native third party applications on the iPhone, and we plan to have an SDK in developers’ hands in February. We are excited about creating a vibrant third party developer community around the iPhone and enabling hundreds of new applications for our users. With our revolutionary multi-touch interface, powerful hardware and advanced software architecture, we believe we have created the best mobile platform ever for developers.

Steve went on to say that they are taking their time creating the SDK because they want to do it the right way:

It will take until February to release an SDK because we’re trying to do two diametrically opposed things at once—provide an advanced and open platform to developers while at the same time protect iPhone users from viruses, malware, privacy attacks, etc. This is no easy task. Some claim that viruses and malware are not a problem on mobile phones—this is simply not true. There have been serious viruses on other mobile phones already, including some that silently spread from phone to phone over the cell network. As our phones become more powerful, these malicious programs will become more dangerous. And since the iPhone is the most advanced phone ever, it will be a highly visible target.

This is going just as we predicted. Patience is what will pay off. Again, I think many of you out there should play it safe and wait for the official SDK that will verify applications and allow true authentication of applications via Apple's mechanism rather than jailbreak your precious iPhone.

And just in case you thought the iPod Touch was going to be left out, Steve added:

P.S.: The SDK will also allow developers to create applications for iPod touch.
Apple announced it's next generation operating system, Mac OS X 10.5, code name Leopard will be released on October 26, 2007. While all of us here use a Macintosh, I'm sure some of our readers out there are using a Windows based computers as well.

While reading the website AppleInsider the other day, we stumbled across a few things that confirmed what we've been thinking all along: Leopard will bring more functionality to the iPhone. Have you wondered where the To-Do list was in the iPhone? What about syncing your notes? Well after reading Road to Mac OS X Leopard: Mail 3.0 over at AppleInsider, I can clearly see what the future will bring for the iPhone.

The article shows how To-do lists and notes will sync with the Leopard's new Mail 3.0. Complete with screenshots and walk-through this is something we've been longing for since we got the iPhone. It's great to know that this functionality will be a reality in a couple of weeks!

So if you're already on a Mac, you can look forward to Leopard and of course, a firmware update from Apple of course!
Lots of iPhone and iPod touch jailbreak stuff today. Seems like everyone and their mama is out to jailbreak something!

Since we know some of you out there are into that kind of thing, we'll post the links for ya!

Enjoy!

Jailbreak INdependence updated to 1.2.2

Those iPhone and iPod Touch folks have decrypted the ramdisk and are now installing apps on the iPod Touch, engadget reports. Go to their site for more details and some screenshots as well.
Today Apple Inc. (AAPL) debuted their Web apps page with a lot of great sites to visit that are tailored to the iPhone!  They've also released a guide to developing web apps, as well as a way to submit your web app to be featured.

Don't know what a web app is? Check out Apple's page describing what web apps are and how to get started making your own.
iPhoneSIMFree, the guys who unlocked and possibly bricked more than a few iPhones have released another hack to SIM Unlock the 1.1.1 version of the iPhone software. They also believe that their new software will restore and repair bricked iPhones.

From their site:
This now means that SimFree v1.6 release, is now capable of completely restoring/repairing software unlocked "bricked" iPhone

Will you trust them the second time around? Once bitten, twice....

We won't do this to any of our iPhones but feel free to try and report back! iPhoneSIMFree costs about $60 - $100 depending on where you get it from.
So TUAW's Erica Sadun announced today that the iPhone Dev team has released a Jailbreak for iPhone firmware 1.1.1.

We'll be upfront and say we won't jailbreak our iPhone this time, although if you want to, by all means do and please report back to us if you like!

While the proposition of jailbreaking 1.1.1 is tempting, there are a number of factors keeping us from doing so.

The first is that the method for doing the jailbreak is an exploit. Jailbreak uses an buffer overflow in MobileSafari’s TIFF handling code that can be exploited to execute code with root privileges. Because this is a security vulnerability, we're almost positive this will be plugged by Apple's next iPhone firmware update and then once again the cat and mouse game of jailbreaking the iPhone will commence once more.

The second is the fact that the current firmware update bricked various iPhones and we'd rather be safe than sorry. Many of the iPhones affected were bricked because they were unlocked but as far as we can tell, no one got a bricked phone from a jailbreak... but then again why take a chance?

The third reason: there aren't any third party apps I can't live without right now. Some of them are close to being really cool but most are nothing more than alpha versions or ideas. Right before the 1.1.1 update, my iPhone had to constantly be rebooted because summerboard kept crashing it (or maybe it was some other third party application). After the update, no crashes!

That said, feel free to jailbreak your iPhone. Just be careful out there!

Apple to launch official iPhone web app directory
It will have the same submission process as Apple's Dashboard widgets. We'll see if this pans out or not.

The other side of iPhone security
Interesting article. Talks about the fact that the iPhone runs on OS X and what the iPhone hackers have done is expose vulnerabilities and how eventually this will help tighten up security on OS X but may eventually mean more folks trying their best to break in.

We think this might not be a bug... but rather someone at Apple didn't think anyone would purchase more thean 8 ringtones. Apparently if you try to sync more than 8 ringtones to your iPhone, iTunes just won't let you. This is why Apple has released this support doc describing a work around to get more than the allotted 8 ringtones onto your iPhone.

Here's what you have to do:

  1. Select iPhone in the source list in iTunes.
  2. Click the Summary tab and deselect "Automatically sync when this iPhone is connected.
  3. Click the Ringtones tab and select "Selected Ringtones."
  4. Select the ringtones you want to sync and then click Sync.

Springboard hack updated for 1.1.1

Now Springboard has a cool "paging" feature which allows you to have apps on multiple pages or pagination for your apps. To access it you must first Jailbreak your iPhone then access this link from Mobile Safari.

iPhone BSD package updated
iPhone hacker/dev NerveGas has updated the BSD subsystem just in time for the upcoming jailbreak for 1.1.1 update.

Where theres a will theres a way? Seems that the iPhone/iTouch Dev Team (yes they've now combined forces... or maybe they are one and the same?) have finally managed to Jailbreak iPhone software update 1.1.1. So what does it mean for you, the daring iPhone hacker? Not much just yet.

Seems like Third-party apps kinda run but probably a lot of them have to be compiled for the new framework. Springboard, the finder like app that allows you to switch applications, seems to have a locked down list of applications it's allowed to show. And of course since its a preliminary release, a few more things that are broken which you can read about here. I guess the good news is that Mobile Terminal App works as well as the entire BSD suite too.

We're gonna say this again: On this end, we'll be patient and just wait it out until Apple allows third party apps on the iPhone. We're not sure if we're willing to jailbreak the iPhone with the risk of bricking or messing up the firmware and having the iPhone not work the way it should. In this writers opinion, there wasn't anything on the third-party that I cannot live without just yet. SURE it was nice to rearrange my springboard and change the background, but other than that, I can't think of an application that was so good that I'm missing right now. However I do wish the iPhone/iTouch dev team luck and we'll be watching from the sidelines!

If you jailbreak your iPhone and wish to blog about the experience, please contact us! Maybe you can write for the iPhoneNewsBlog!

New Apple iPhone TV ads
Normal folks talking in front of a black screen about their Apple iPhone. These commercials are just great! We hope they go to different cities and do this ad campaign!

Japan's InfoBar2 raises the ante a bit

But we still don't think it's an iPhone killer. They run on two TOTALLY different networks. The Japanese are so far ahead of the US as far as infrastructure and use of the cell phone in everyday life. For example:

InfoBar 2 users can surf the Net at speeds up to 2.4Mbps compared to the paltry 70Kbps to 135Kbps AT&T Wireless' EDGE Network provides for iPhone users. ...users bored with web surfing can tune in - for free - to any of Japan's many digital TV stations, 7 alone in the Tokyo area. And get this - KDDI's Lismo music store not only allows direct downloading of songs to one's handset, but if you're not sure of the title or artist, just hum a few bars and Lismo will match up possible songs from its music database!
When do we get that kind of speed and features on a phone in the US? Probably never.

CNN compares the Nokia N95 to the iPhone
We're not buying it but others might. The whole user experience and ease of use and syncing with the Mac make the iPhone a dream. But here's what CNN says:

So which to buy? Though both offer excellent features, the N95 is faster and gives you the freedom to roam. But some users might not think that freedom is worth an extra $300. Were it not for the phone's hefty price tag, Nokia just might give Apple a run for its money.

Arik Hesseldah Won't Buy an iPhone
And he doesn't think you should either:

...the company that styles itself as the technology supplier of choice for creative people with great ideas is insisting that to own its products is to accept a defined orthodoxy where there's only one acceptable way to do things. That doesn't sound like the Apple I know. So I'm not going to buy an iPhone. And until Apple commits to changing this ridiculous policy, I don't think you should either.

Is Apple going to open up the iPhone to third-party software? That's been the question that has fueled the fire of many a hacker that was developing applications before the 1.1.1 firmware update. Now it seems that Apple just might open up the iPhone as long as you play by Steve Job's rules.

9to5Mac.com is reporting from sources that Apple will be working with their partners to bring a few third-party applications to the iPhone.

Apple has been furiously working with their partners on games and applications for the iPhone/iPod and the standardized Human-Interface Controls that will go along with them. For instance, EA [ERTS, purveyor of Madden NFL, NBA Live, etc.] is currently porting their iPod lineup to the OSX iPod/iPhone platform to be sold along side the classic iPod OS versions. Other big developers with strict confidentiality agreements are also on board.

According to 9to5mac, Apple has hired a few developers from Danger, the company that makes the SideKick for T-mobile in hopes they can design an architecture that would be similar to what the Sidekick has with Tmobile, namely a software testing and distribution system.

We firmly believe that Leopard will pave the way for more applications and functionality of the iPhone. We really can't imagine Leopard NOT bringing anything new to the iPhone. The much rumored Note syncing for instance should become a reality. Writing an SDK for an OS that isn't quite done is not something Apple is going to do. We should all just sit back and be patient.
'Brick' Enters Formal English Lexicon As Slang For A Useless iPhone
Yes, we've been guilty of using 'brick' as well. Probably from the days of modding the PSP. That got old real fast. An interesting article of how the word went mainstream.

iPhone 1.1.1 hack
Eric Sadun is liveblogging the attempt to duplicate a hack brought about by iPhone hackers "dinopio" and "Edgan".
By using symbolic links before doing a 1.1.1 upgrade, they were able to gain access to the entire 1.1.1 file tree. Says Sadun. So far it looks like she's been successful at getting to the directory structure and pulling out the iTunes Music Store. She tried the app on 1.0.2 but it didn't work. Good luck with hacking the 1.1.1, but I don't think we're going to touch it for fear of 'bricking' our iPhone when Apple's next update comes out!

10 percent of September iPhone sold for Unlock?
If this report is true, then thats great for Apple, bad for those looking to cash in on the unlocked phone. Gene Munster of Piper Jaffray estimates that as many as 100,000 iPhones were sold for unlock. Munster and his team spent 12 hours counting sales in Apple Stores in late September. Munster says the team noticed folks buying the maximum of 5 iPhones/customer which they believe were being purchased for unlock. Let's hope these folks don't all have bricks!

And if you do have a brick, don't forget you can win our brand new 4GB iPhone just by signing up for our newsletter here! The giveaway ends October 31, 2007 so sign up today!
It was refreshing to read an interview with Andrew Welch of Ambrosia Software over at TUAW. For those not in the know, Ambrosia has been in the shareware software business for over 15 years and Andrew is no stranger to the Mac as his company has been making great software for the Mac since day one. Andrew is interviewed about his feelings on Apple, the iPhone and how the iPhone 1.1.1 broke his ringtone product called iToner.

What I found refreshing is that Mr. Welch could be very angry and bitter at Apple at this time in his career, especially with all of the Apple hate going on at this time. Instead Welch chooses using the wisdom of being in the business for a long time to bring to light some of the reasons Apple does what they do.

A really great interview. Take a read for yourself. TUAW Interview" Ambrosia's Andrew Welch.
iPhone SIM-unlock technical breakdown
Probably one of the best, most concise technical explanation about the SIM-unlocked iPhones and why they might be rendered inoperable by the 1.1.1 update. [via Daring Fireball]

Gruber vs. Griffiths
This opinion piece from John Gruber of DaringFireball.com responding to Rob Griffiths piece for the Macworld Editors Weblog titled “iPhone 1.0 Forever” had two great comments:

"The idea that Apple has screwed over or even somehow been rude to the grassroots iPhone developer community is absurd. Apple never asked for nor encouraged iPhone software development, and the fact that it happened anyway put Apple under zero obligation to support it."

and

"There’s only one way to pressure Apple into opening up iPhone development, and it isn’t by developing underground iPhone apps. It’s by not buying iPhones. Money talks, and right now, there doesn’t seem to be a shortage of people willing to give Apple money in exchange for a completely closed iPhone."

Feel Free to Complain to the FCC?
This guy decided to complain to the FCC that his iPhone became a brick after he unlocked his phone and installed the 1.1.1 update. Great comments to this piece.
